Ratislaw Racoff was born in Russia in 1904. He lived and worked in Paris, exhibiting regularly at the Salon des Independants. He specialised in flower paintings and particularly atmospheric scenes of Paris, empty streets and corners, and oblique views of the Seine.
The collaboration between the Russian-born painter Rotislaw (Rastislaw) Racoff (1904-1982) and the famous French gallery owner Dina Vierny was the definitive turning point in the artist's career. After discovering his work in the early 1950s, Vierny became his primary champion, helping transition his career from an uncertain passion into full-time artistic success.
When they met in the early 1950s, Dina Vierny gave Racoff a crucial piece of advice: she urged him to remove characters from his paintings. This direction allowed him to lean heavily into his signature style-empty, poetic, and mysterious Parisian streets.
The Breakthrough 1952 Exhibition: Vierny organised Racoff's first exhibition at her Galerie Dina Vierny (located at 36 Rue Jacob in Paris) in 1952. Before the opening, a doubtful Racoff famously hesitated to even step inside the gallery to deliver his canvases. However, the show was an instant triumph, and every single painting sold within days.
Following the 1952 breakthrough, the Galerie Dina Vierny went on to host four more major exhibitions of his work, aggressively promoting his paintings both within France and to international collectors. Vierny categorized him among her beloved "Modern Primitives" (naïve artists) alongside painters like Bauchant, Bombois, and Séraphine de Senlis.
His work continues to be associated with her legacy, notably highlighted in retrospectives like the one held at the Musée Maillol in Banyuls-sur-Mer.
He died in 1982.
