Literature

Michael Stringer was a film production designer, art director, painter, and illustrator.

Stringer was art director or production designer on dozens of films, working with Walt Disney, John Huston and Fred Zinnemann. He recreated Sherwood Forest in Spain for Robin and Marian (1976) and a Ukrainian Jewish village in Yugoslavia for the musical Fiddler on the Roof (1971), for which he won an Oscar nomination in 1972. A Shot in the Dark (1964) - one of Peter Sellers best comedies - gave Michael an opportunity to produce some beautiful and elegant sets for this lavish film. Another well-known film he worked on as production designer was the Bond spoof Casino Royale (1967).

He has also worked in the theatre, particularly at the Mermaid Theatre in London on productions of the Tempest and Brecht's Galileo.

He was also the author and illustrator of two children's books, The Magic Carpet Adventure and Baron Battleaxe and the Magic Carpet.

In later life, he left films, devoted himself to painting in his lucid and colourful style, and exhibited around the world including New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and London.
